Professional & Industry Liaison

The Professional & Industry Liaison Committee coordinates Long Island Section activities with local groups including industry groups, professional organizations, civic groups and social groups with the aim of enhancing public awareness of the IEEE and engineering in general. Our primary relationship with other professional societies is through the Engineers Joint Committee of Long Island.

In coordination with other section committees, affinity groups, society chapters and student branches, we have reached out to other professional societies, educational institutions, local government officials and Long Island based service organizations with an eye toward increasing the social engagement of our members with the rest of our community.

Our committee is actively involved with Farmingdale State College, CW Post, NYIT, USMMA, Brookhaven National Laboratories, Huntington LaunchPad, OWASP and the Huntington Senior Citizen Center. We have assisted in the creation of several Engineers’ Clubs and we cosponsor many meetings.

The Professional and Industry Liaison Committee has been working closely with the Robotics and Automation Society Chapter to bring technology awareness to local libraries.  The initial effort was concentrated at Harborfields Public Library with a Robotics Workshop for teens and 4th and 5th graders.  It is a 1 1/2 hour program.  The first 1/2 hour we work with 4 teens with interest in Robotics.  We give them a demonstration and preliminary instruction on how to access the iRobot education site and simulator programming the Root and Create3.  Those programs can then be run on our real demo robots.  Then the 4th and 5th graders come in and are assigned to the teens, 2 per laptop workstation and the teens teach the young ones.  We have been holding a workshop each month since August 2022. If anyone is interested in starting something similar at their library, contact me at bwilkes@ieee.org.  We will work with you to set it up.
