Chair’s message, October 2018

The 2019 IEEE Long Island Section Officer election will be starting on October 1, 2018. As in prior years, the election will be run using IEEE vTools Voting. The voting will take place until October 31, 2018. An IEEE eNotice was sent to all Section Members. I am pleased to report that there is now a full slate of candidates for the 2019 IEEE Long Island Section Officer positions. The candidates are: Section Chair: Lou DOnofrio, First Vice Chair: James Colotti, Second Vice Chair: Arnold Stillman, Treasurer: Santo Mazzola, Secretary: Ron Pirich.

I would like to thank the Historical Milestone committee for an excellent ceremony to commemorate the First Two Dimensional MRI Milestone. The event was held on September 5th at the new MART building at Stony Brook to honor Dr. Paul Lautebur, the Stony Brook professor who produced the first two-dimensional MRI image. Please read the article about the event in this issue of the PULSE.

I would also like to thank Rhonda Green, our Vice Chair of the Signal Processing Society, for arranging a Membership Development event at Zebra Technologies. About 30 employees signed up to receive additional information about joining IEEE, and several suggested that the LI Section host an event at Zebra Technologies. Please read the article about this event in this issue of the PULSE.

October 2, 2018 is IEEE Day. It is the ninth anniversary of a day that IEEE commemorates a gathering of engineers in 1884 to share technical ideas. Thousands of IEEE members in local communities will join together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow. For more details, visit ieeeday.org.

There are many lectures and other events planned for the month of October. Further information is in this issue of the PULSE. I would encourage you to check the Section website and calendar frequently to stay informed about all of our upcoming events and seminars. The 2019 Power Electronics Symposium will be held on November 8th. For more information go to the registration link which is https://www.ieee.li/pes/.

We are always in need of energetic volunteers with a positive and collaborative attitude to help us with Section activities. I would encourage all of our members to be involved in supporting the IEEE Long Island Section. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please contact me at chairman@ieee.li.

Thank you for your support of our Section, and I look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.

Regards,
Lou D’Onofrio, PE, SM IEEE IEEE
