Chair’s message, November 2018

An IEEE eNotice will be sent to all Section Members. I am pleased to report that the Long Island Section has received a Membership Recruitment Award from the IEEE. The membership development goals were developed based on our Section’s three year performance. We were commended for continuing to grow IEEE membership in the Long Island Section. Please see my article in this edition of the PULSE on page page 22. On October 12th, David Pinkowitz represented the Section at a meeting with the NYIT Students. Please read his article on page 8 of the PULSE.

The Long Island Section elections were completed on October 31, 2018, and the 2019 Officers are:
Section Chair: Lou DOnofrio
First Vice Chair: James Colotti
Second Vice Chair: Arnold Stillman
Treasurer: Santo Mazzola
Secretary: Ron Pirich

This is the time of the year that we renew our membership to the IEEE. You should have received a mailing from IEEE reminding you to renew your membership, although you can easily renew online at ieee.org/renew. I would also like you to consider inviting a colleague who is not a member to join the IEEE as well. A personal invitation is a very effective way to recruit new members. Please refer to page 23 for further information on recruiting new members.

The 2018 Power Electronics Symposium will be held on November 8th at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. For more information go to the registration link which is https://www.ieee.li/pes/. The event flyer is on page 15 of this issue.

On November 13, 2018 the IEEE Computer Society will be co-sponsoring a lecture with the Stony Brook Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at SUNY Stony Brook. Dr. Vibha Mane will be presenting a lecture on “Practical Machine Learning” at 6:30pm. Further information can be found on page 13 in this issue . Check the LI Section website, ieee.li, to stay informed about all of our upcoming events.

Please consider writing an article for the PULSE. Further information is on page 6 of this issue. We are always in need of energetic volunteers with a positive and collaborative attitude to help us with Section activities. I would encourage all of our members to be involved in supporting the IEEE Long Island Section. If you have any suggestions or recommendations, please contact me at chairman@ieee.li. Thank you for your support of our Section, and I look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.

Regards,
Lou D’Onofrio, PE, SM IEEE
