Chair’s message, March 2018

March is a very busy month for the Long Island Section. Our 65th Annual Awards Banquet will be held on March 22, 2018 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The Awards Banquet is an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of those who have contributed to the “Advancement of Humanity through Technology”. The link to the event notice is https://ieee.li/awards/awards.pdf. The notice also has information on registering for the banquet. I hope that you will join me at the Awards Banquet and encour-age your colleagues to join us as well.

The March PULSE also has further information on these additional events:

  • LINUX- based Embedded System Design Workshop—March 17th
  • IEEE Long Island Section Annual Awards Banquet: March 22
  • Region 1 Student Conference: March 23-25
  • Long Island RF/Microwave Symposium & Exhibits: April 5th
  • LISAT Conference: May 4th.

IEEE’s core purpose is to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Most of us know that IEEE fulfills this mission by offering excellent conference, seminar, technical papers. However, you may not be aware that the IEEE Foundation also supports many Humanitarian and Philanthropic efforts. One of the reasons that I joined IEEE was to support these efforts.

The IEEE Foundation provides funding and support for projects that provide a broad impact and yet are sustainable over the long term. The portal of the IEEE Smart Village program provides a list of upcoming conferences, training opportunities, and educational resources. You can use this link http://theinstitute.ieee.org/resources/products-and-services/ieee-resources-to-help-members-get-involved-in-social-causes to get further information.

At the Section level there are also many ways that we can contribute to the IEEE mission. Attending one of the conferences or seminars is one way. Participating in one of our Societies, attending our networking event, or writing an article for the PULSE are other ways. I invite you to participate in our Section activities and encourage your colleagues to as well.

If you have suggestions on ways we can enhance value to our members, please email me at chair@ieee.li.

Regards,
Lou D’Onofrio
