Chair’s Message, June 2022

Welcome to the summer season everyone. We are hopeful that the pandemic has receded to manageable levels by now. Even though it remains beneficial to practice safe behaviors such as social distancing and indoor masking, activities are not fraught with danger as they used to be. Case in point is the successful awards banquet, well-attended on March 31. As the pictures in this month’s edition aptly show, the banquet was a huge success, with nearly 140 attendees enjoying the cocktail hour and the presentation of the Section and Region awards. The keynote speaker, Dr. Michiko Minty, gave us an introduction to the design and purpose of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s next world-class facility, the Electron Ion Collider. Please enjoy the pictures and let us look forward to this summer and the next year as a renewal of old ways, even if slightly modified.

Among the renewals we can look forward to are the return of the IEEE social hours, a monthly happy hour get together. Although the bar is a cash bar, the snacks are free. James Colotti has done a masterful job hosting these and he will continue to do so shortly. Watch your email for the invitations.

Secondly, we are planning a summer event, likely an outing or picnic, to take place in August. If you have ideas for activities, please send them along to chair@ieee.li. A similar idea has been put forward by members of the Region 1 Pace Committee, so there may be more than one event to enjoy this summer.

Lastly, Lon Chu is organizing a summer design event for our student members; a solar-powered speed limit sign. More details on this competition will follow. Student chapter advisors and officers please take note and look for more information on this shortly. Please, everyone, enjoy the summer and stay healthy at the same time.
