Chair’s Message, Dec 2022

Welcome to the holiday season and the last Pulse of the year. I want to wish all the Section members greetings as the winter holiday season approaches. We do not all celebrate in the same way, if at all, but we all can take the time to appreciate good cheer among ourselves, especially after the last few years. To ring in the start of December, please look forward to attending the Section member networking social, again arranged by James Colotti. It will be at Chili’s in Farmingdale on December 5th. Check your email for directions; the subject line will read Invitation “IEEE LI Member Networking”.

This issue is the last of the yearly run of 10 issues; at the last Executive Committee meeting, the number of issues was cut to six per year, with a publication schedule to be determined at Decembers’ meeting.

The Section has arranged to join LISTnet, the Long Island Software and Technology Network. From their description, “LISTnet is a non-profit organization on Long Island that builds a strong ecosystem for software and technology.” Not only does the Section’s membership expand the opportunities for networking on Long Island, it also serves a more prosaic purpose in providing storage for IEEE equipment at the headquarters in Plainview. Among the events they host is their annual awards ceremony, and this year, two of the Section’s members received well-deserved awards, Babak Beheshti and Barbara Porter. See the notices in this issue for a report on their awards.

Now is also the time of year to announce candidates for the Section leadership positions. All positions are open and the election will take place throughout December. Self-nominations are acceptable and even encouraged. The positions are:
• Chair
• Vice Chair
• Second Vice Chair
• Treasurer
• Secretary

The second vice-chair position has one major task during the term, the planning of the annual awards banquet.

Lastly, please consider candidates for Senior Member elevation. This is an honor that IEEE affords for professional achievement. It is not automatic, requiring three references from qualified IEEE members as well as a c.v or resume.

To all who celebrate, happy holidays. To those who don’t, have a healthy and warm December and happy new year to all.
