Dear IEEE Long Island Section Members: Welcome to the autumnal equinox, a time of year that can be best enjoyed with seasonal foods, reflections on the tenuous balance between daylight and darkness and/or a vigorous celebration of IEEE Day. That’s on October. 7, and as I write this in late September, it’s part of a full slate of upcoming events on our busy fall calendar.
IEEE Day is celebrated to recognize the institute’s very first technical meeting back in 1884 – the one that started it all. Region 1 encourages you to host a local event somewhere in the Oct. 5-18 range, and you can find plenty more information on the importance of the day and ways you might celebrate it right here. Please reference the official website for more information: https://ieeeday.org.
I’d also like to note preparations for the Section 2026 Election. Junior Past Chair Arnie Stillman is leading the Nomination Committee and has started the nomination process. Please watch for more election directives from Arnie.
Planning is already underway for the 2025 Long Island Power Electronics Symposium & Exhibition, scheduled to be held on Nov. 6 at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge. For more information on the power-electronics community’s premier annual event, check out this page: https://www.ieee.li/pes/.
Congratulations to Sean J. Bentley, PhD, the new chairman of the IEEE Photonics Society-Long Island Chapter. Sean’s 25 years of IEEE membership – including 18 years in the Photonics Society – makes him uniquely qualified to lead the revitalization of this important chapter. We look forward to working with him as he rebuilds the Photonics Society.
We are always in need of energetic volunteers with positive and collaborative attitudes to help us with IEEE Long Island Section activities. I encourage all members to become actively involved in supporting the section and thank you for your continued support. I also look forward to connecting with many of you at our upcoming events. Nothing makes our community thrive like sharing ideas and building on our collective knowledge!
With gratitude and anticipation,
Rhonda Green
