Power and Energy Society (PES) & Industry Applications (IAS)

MESSAGE FROM CHAIR

Welcome to the Joint Long Island IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) & Industry Applications Society (IAS) (PE31/IA34) Chapter website. In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, Long Island has emerged as a hub for innovative thinkers and industry leaders. Situated east of Manhattan in southeastern New York State, Long Island is a vital part of the New York metropolitan area, both in terms of its population and expansive land area. Long Island is also a key player in supporting New York’s mission for a carbon-free electric grid by 2040, being home to the state’s first offshore wind farm, which delivers clean electricity to areas in need.

Our chapter consists of more than 100 active members, including power engineering professionals, academicians, students, and associates in and around the Long Island area. We offer top-notch technical meetings, industrial visits and courses to both our members and non-members. Recent topics covered in our technical meetings include Grid Modernization, PSCAD workshop, Inverter Based Resources latest developments, Application of Industrial Heat pumps, National Electric Code (NEC) Applications, Superconductors, Motor circuits, Trends in Transmission Planning, and Electric Vehicles (EVs).

As a joint chapter, we aim to spread awareness about energy conservation and educate everyone on the latest trends in power systems, including protection and reliability, industrial innovations, energy markets, the power generation, transmission, distribution, and storage of electrical energy. We organize classes and technical discussions to enhance the understanding and application of electrical and electronic engineering in the design, manufacture, and use of electrical systems, apparatus, and devices. We strive to make the world greener by advocating for renewable energy and teaching best practices for its use. With the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources (IBR) in the North American bulk power system, our chapter hosts events to keep our members updated on the latest trends. We also offer lectures on CEU/PDH accredited courses for continuing education on various topics and support the industry by participating in engineering standards and recommended practices development.

We are continually seeking potential speakers for our technical meetings.  If you have an interest in presenting on topics related to Power and Energy Systems or Industrial Applications, please reach out to us via the email provided below. Additionally, if you would like to contribute to advancing our chapter’s success, please contact us at the same email address or reach out to any member of our executive committee. Your involvement, whether through volunteering or in other capacities, is invaluable and greatly appreciated.
