Dr Andrew R Sass Presents…

4-Wheeled robot using the ESP32 CAM with WIFI complete duplex communication and a Arduino Mega for robot control and robot sensor control.
With an Arduino Pro Mini used as a dedicated OLED display driver.
Mounted with several components including a navigational module & an articulating arm holding a camera.
The captured feed was then fed to Open CV to identify color cards.
The robot can be manipulate by both remote controlled or autonomous scripting.
It also uses an Xbox controller to drive & manipulate the the camera by panning & tilting.
The codes were interwoven through several interfaces using Javascript, HTML & Python for the Web display and Open CV & C & C++ using the Arduino IDE.

The lore of MicroMouse extends back almost 50 years, when it was introduced by the IEEE.
Events are held around the world, including at our nearby coastal neighbor’s campus, MIT.
This May, the Long Island Robotics and Automation chapter brings the Micromouse competition to Long Island!

MicroMouse involves a palm-size robot whose task is to navigate through a 16X16 cell maze; fastest time wins.
In addition, actuator and sensor operation are of great importance from a speed standpoint.
As a result, the Competition offers an interesting technical challenge and a wonderful educational opportunity for its student-competitors.

Teams and interested individuals can REGISTER here https://forms.gle/vF4j6qcgKxGQDq5N6  to receive Competition information as it becomes available.

On Jan. 24, 2022, Gim Soon Wan, IEEE Boston Section Student Activities Chair, 4X Regional Winner and a World MicroMouse Champion gave a presentation of an Introduction to MicroMouse. Here are some highlights from that presentation.

Maze Specifications

Maze comprises 16 x 16 of 18cm x 18cm unit squares
Walls are 5cm high and 1.2cm thick
Side walls is white color, and the top shall be red or white color
Outside walls enclose the entire maze
Maze floor shall be made of wood and finished with a non-gloss paint
Start square is at one of the 4 corners of the maze Destination is at the central square space (4 squares) There must be at least one wall touching each pole.

Micromouse Specifications

A self-contained mobile robot that must not leave anything behind while negotiating in the maze
No combustion energy sources
Must not step over, climb over, scratch, or damage the walls during exploring in a maze.
Dimensions shall not greater than 25cm in length or width. But, there is no height limit.

Recommendations for study and understanding of Robotics

To get an overview seek out the lecture series provided by “The Great Courses”. The series is called Robotics. It is made up of 24 lectures presented by Professor John Howard Long (https://www.vassar.edu/faculty/jolong) and was recorded in 2015. The lectures can be obtained at no cost from many libraries, either as a DVD set or streamed. It is available for steaming through the Harborfields Public Library using the streaming service Kanopy. When connected to Kanopy, search on Robotics. The 24 lecture series is summarized in the attached document, Robotics Course.txt. I logical way of utilizing the Robotics Course is to first view it by streaming through all 24 lectures in the background while doing something else, like checking eMail, etc. Then view each lecture while taking notes, pausing or replaying portions to be sure to get the desired information. You can also search on various names and identifiers to deepen understanding. Search on names of each Robot name as demonstrated and name of manufacturer. You will find that a number of the products have been discontinued or the companies have gone out of business or have been taken over by larger companies. After completing note taking, plan on a study group and review each lecture as a group. Let any member of the group call a pause in order to discuss details of material being presented. Also, consider buying or building each of the demonstrated device.

We also started looking for low cost educational robots as well as sensors and actuators. The best approach appears to be purchase of kits. We bought several and tried to build them. Initially, the very small size of metric screws and nuts in the kits proved difficult to work with and easy to lose.

We thought the best way to understand sensors and actuators was to put on kit building workshops   We have been test building a few.

Note that the LAFVIN kits do not include the batteries.

At some point, I will write my experiences with each kit and provide build guidance.

We have also been experimenting with ChatGPT and suggest a future workshop for interested adults. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are part of the study of Robotics. I suggest another one of the Great Courses entitled Introduction to Machine Learning. It is also available through Kanopy.

We are available for in person meetings at the library, zoom calls or telephone conversations to provide any needed information. My email address is bwilkes@ieee.org. Other team member email addresses will be provided. If there is sufficient interest after the workshops, we can arrange continuing support.

Educational Activities Committee‘s charter is to help ensure the growth of skill and knowledge among the technical profession on Long Island and to foster individual commitment to continuing education among IEEE LI members, the engineering and scientific community, and the general public. We will promote EAB (Educational Activity Board) objectives to Long Island IEEE members and voice the concern of IEEE Long Island members in these pursuits whenever relevant.
The IEEE LI Section has many groups that already bring in speakers for the education of our members. The Educational Activities supports these groups by arranging speakers on varied topics such as Power, Embedded Processing, RF, and other areas.
Educational Activities also works with GOLD and local University IEEE student groups to provide a prelude to the Electrical Engineering profession and to bring industry examples of the daily work as Electrical Engineers. At the High School level, Education Activities show that Electrical Engineering is not a poor choice in the new Millennium because of outsourcing. EEs are needed to bring new solutions to the many new challenges facing the new generation.

Sample: IEEE Engineering and Science Internship Summary Example:

Long Island Students are invited to submit technical internship summaries for publication in the IEEE newsletter, the Pulse.

Criteria Answers
Name: (LastName, FirstName) Chu, Lonni
School/University Attending: SUNY Suffolk Community College
College/Department: Computer Science
Intended Degree: A.A.S. Information Technology
Intended Graduation Year: Spring (Year)
Internship Position Title Computer Internship
Company Name Brookhaven National Laboratory
Semester/Year of Internship Fall (Year)
Supervisor Name Dr. A: Be sure to get their permission
Program (If any) you are part of (Career Services?) Suffolk Cooperative and Internship Program

Please include the following:

  1. (3-4) Sentences of your impression of the internship, and why you feel this way.
  2. Give us an example of your positive impressions.
  3. Describe your project and/or duties.
  4. Tell us your take away from this experience.
  5. Tell us the impact of your work at this company.

Sample Summary:

Dr. A of Brookhaven National Labs was a noted international scientist so he was not available on a daily basis. He clearly defined his expectations though to create a connection means from his experiment in MATLAB that would extract sample data and be analyzed in an Access database. I was expected to learn MATLAB and Access in one semester and apply this knowledge to his project; which I did. What I liked about the internship was after extensive research in their library, I found I that I rose to the occasion with self-discipline and self-motivation to develop a viable solution. My takeaway is that even if you are faced with a daunting task with limited direction, be creative, ask questions and persevere. A solution will present itself.

I would recommend wholeheartedly any technical internship opportunity to get the exposure and experience of the real-life workforce. How people influence and contribute to a STEM research project in different ways are evident. Although my part is a small piece of the bigger picture it is none the less impactful to me and a helpful research element to Dr. A. At a place like Brookhaven you experience high level energy and state of the art technology which is not easily taught in the classroom. Relish your internship, meet new people and approach your experiences with a positive attitude and it will take you places.
