Abstract: The coming 5th generation mobile communication networks have many technical challenges to spur R&D of advanced technologies at all layers. Different from the traditional roles of an antenna as a passive element, the modern antenna technology has been playing an “active” role to greatly amplify the capacity of wireless communications. This talk will brief the evolution and trends of antenna technologies in future mobile communications. In particular, this talk will share my opinion of the promising antenna technologies in 5G networks. Lastly, as an example, the application of novel microwave EM lens antenna technologies in 5G and metamaterial-based antenna technologies will be introduced.

Speaker Biography:  Zhi Ning Chen received his BEng, MEng, and PhD degrees all in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Communications Engineering, China and his second PhD degree from University of Tsukuba, Japan, respectively.

Since 1988, he has worked at several universities for his teaching and research. In 2004, he worked at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, USA. During 1999-2016, he worked with the Institute for Infocomm Research as a Principle Scientist and Department Head and Advisor. In 2012, he joined National University of Singapore as a Professor.
